About :

  • Jayshankar Prasad was an eminent Hindi poet and dramatist. He was born in Varanasi in 1890 in the rich family of Sunghani Sahu. Prasad‘s first compositions in verse were in Brajbhasha in the form of ‘Samasya-purti‘. Most of his early writings were traditional in theme and craft and were published in the monthly ‘Indu‘ which he himself later edited. His first work is Chitradhar, a collection of poems, short stories, plays and essays, followed by Kanan-kusam, Prem-pathik and Karunalaya (lyrical dramas). Then he turned to Khariboli and gave a new direction to Hindi poetry. The publication of Jharna (1918) augurs romantic poetry and with it dawns the ‘chhayavad-yug‘ in Hindi literature. His magnum opus, Kamayani (1935) depicts the psychic journey of man through time and space. The poet has given a new interpretation to the allegory. An epic of enduring value, its theme of peace is of universal relevance.
  • In his dramas we find Prasad to be a man of romantic temper with a rich cultural background. Most of the plays are historical but they present either the problems of our own society or delve deep into basic universal problems pertaining to human nature. Of his twelve plays, Chandragupta, Skandgupta, Ajatshatru and Dhruvaswamini occupy the pride of place in the history of Hindi drama.
  • In contrast with his dramas, his two novels Kankal and Titli, and several collections of short stories are realistic in tone.
  • Prasad was endowed with the rich creative genius of a trail-blazer. Disinterested in literary controversies, spurning the limelight of publicity, averse to both criticism and approbation, he devoted himself totally to the service of the muses. His contribution to Hindi Literature is indeed monumental. He died in 1937.
