- As the 2nd in the Nature Conservation Series, a postage stamp will be issued depicting the “Japanese Otter” (Lutra lutra whiteleyi).
- The otter measures 60-80 cm, with a tail 30-50 cm long. It has webbed feet and short limbs. It frequents the shores of rivers and seas and lives on fish. Though formerly distributed all over Japan, only a few otters now survive in the district of Shikoku and have been designated as protected animals.
