Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji was born on April 1, 1621, in Amritsar, the son of Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji and Mata Nanaki, and was named Tyag Mal at birth. He later became the ninth Guru of the Sikhs and was known as Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. From childhood, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji was trained in martial arts, swordsmanship, and horsemanship. In the Battle of Kartarpur (1635), fought between the Sikhs and the Mughals, Guru Sahib displayed exceptional bravery and remarkable swordsmanship. Pleased with his bravery, his father, Sri Guru Hargobind ji, bestowed upon him the title of “Tegh Bahadur”.
On November 24, 1675, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur ji was publicly executed in Delhi on the orders of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb for opposing forced conversions and defending religious freedom. Gurdwara Sisganj Sahib in Chandni Chowk, Delhi, is the site of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s supreme martyrdom. This year marks the 350^th anniversary of that supreme martyrdom. On this occasion, it is time to reaffirm the values that empower interfaith dialogue, civic consciousness, and our shared cultural unity. In this sense, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji is an eternal source of inspiration for India’s cultural soul.
