- Letter Writing Day was set in 1979 by the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications. Letter Writing Day souvenir sheets have been issued since 1976 to be a prize of the lottery of the summer greeting postal cards, Kamo–mail. However, the souvenir sheets have been also sold at the windows of post offices from 1990.
- The design of the stamp is by Yutaka Sugina, “Giraffe’s Letter“. In the sheet margin, it reads “Letter Writing Day / MPT / Printed by the Printing Bureau”.
