- In the 21st century, India holds a strong position in terms of science and technology. India also serves as a knowledge warehouse with the existence of its many institutions catering to science and technology which come with qualified and trained manpower. IITs have played an important role in the development of science and technology based economy and society in India and abroad.
- IIT Roorkee, has an illustrious history and a glorious past. The Thomason College, the oldest engineering college in India, owes its birth to the waters of Mother Ganges. As early as the year 1845, Lieutenant Baird Smith of the Bengal Engineers, then Superintendent of the Eastern Jumna Canal, began training young Indians at Saharanpur in Civil Engineering for the grade of Sub-Assistant Executive Engineer and in 1846 twenty candidates were admitted to this class. In 1847, the Roorkee College of civil engineering was established which later was known as the Thomason College of Civil Engineering.
- The University of Roorkee celebrated the completion of 150 years of its existence in 1996-1997. The University of Roorkee, now the Indian Institute of Technology had a modest beginning as the Roorkee College of Engineering in the year of 1847, and was converted to the first technical University of India in the year 1949. The institution has an inimitable record of nurturing the enormous talent of this country and providing them with the best of the scientific and technical education of the world. The institution has always provided the path and has been torch bearer for the other upcoming institutions and universities to follow.
- On the 21st September 2001, the University was declared an “Institute of National Importance”, by an Act of Parliament, changing its status from University of Roorkee to Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee.
- The institute offers Bachelor’s Degree courses in 13 disciplines, including Engineering and Architecture; 55 Postgraduate Degree courses are offered in Engineering, Applied Science and Architecture and planning. The Institute has facility for doctoral work in all Departments and Research Centres.
- IIT Roorkee has three campus at Roorkee (365 acres), Saharanpur (25 acres) and Greater Noida (10 acres). It has 23 Departments, 7 Academic Centres and 1 Mehta Family School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence with 526 faculty.
- The alumni of IIT Roorkee has always taken a leading role in setting up the technological and social ventures in India and abroad and have played an important role in the development in India. Ten alumni have won the Padma awards and 25 alumni have won the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology. The institute has produced 7 chairmen of the Indian Railway Board, chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, more than a 100 secretary-level officers in the Government of India, 2 presidents of the Confederation of Indian Industry, Governors of State of India, Chairman of University Grants Commission (India).
- IIT Roorkee was ranked 387th in the QS World University Rankings of 2021, 90th in Asia in 2020, and 47th among BRICS nations in 2019. In India, IIT Roorkee has been ranked fifth in the Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA) by the Ministry of Education, 2021. IIT Roorkee ranked #1 in Architecture, #6 in Engineering and #7 overall in national Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF), 2021. The Department of Management Studies was ranked 12th among management schools in India as per NIRF 2020 whereas it was ranked 1st in the category of Research and Professional Practices. The institute has also got ISO 9001:2008 certification for the academic services.
- Every year, students from more than 50 countries join IIT Roorkee for full-time or short-term training courses. In 1955 the Department of Water Resources Development and Management (WRDM) was established as an Asian African Centre to honor India’s commitment at the Asian African Conference held in Bandung. WRDM and the Department of Hydrology run special post graduate programs for students of the Afro Asian region. These departments have so far trained over 2469 service engineers and agricultural scientists from 48 countries including India. The institute maintains strong international presence through MoUs, exchange programs, and funding propositions.
