Uttarakhand is among the few Indian states that boast two Raj Bhawans, with the first in the state capital, Dehradun and the second one located in the picturesque hill station of Nainital. This historic edifice, originally known as the “Government House,” was constructed during the British colonial era when Nainital served as the summer capital of the United Provinces (now Uttar Pradesh). Designed in the Victorian Gothic style, reminiscent of a Scottish castle, the foundation stone was laid on April 27, 1897, and the construction was completed in 1899.
The Raj Bhawan was designed by architect F.W. Stevens and executive engineer F.O.W. Ortel. Spanning over 200 acres, the two-story mansion comprises 113 rooms. The construction utilized local stones with Ashlar finishing and incorporated Burma teak along with other varieties of teak wood. The building’s design showcases European patterns and Gothic architecture, featuring intricate woodwork, arched windows, and steeply pitched roofs.
Throughout its history, the Raj Bhawan has hosted several notable figures. In the pre-independence era, it served as the residence for British Governors of the United Provinces, including Sir Antony MacDonnell, Sir James, Sir John Misten, and Sir Harcourt Butler. Post-independence, Smt. Sarojini Naidu, the first Governor of Uttar Pradesh, was the first Indian occupant of this historic monument.
Adjacent to the Raj Bhawan lies approximately 160 acres of forested land, home to a diverse range of flora and fauna . The estate’s lush greenery and serene environment make it a haven for nature enthusiasts and contribute to its tranquil ambiance.
One of the estate’s prominent features is its vintage golf course, spread over 45 acres. Established in 1936, it is one of India’s oldest golf courses and is affiliated with the Indian Golf Union.
The Raj Bhawan is open to visitors, offering guided tours of select areas. Tourists can also enjoy a game of golf by paying a nominal green fee. The estate’s sprawling lawns, bonsai garden, and rich floral species add to its allure, making it a must-visit destination for history buffs and nature lovers alike.
