Issued for : A special postage stamp was brought out to commemorate the 35th National Athletic Meeting which had its autumn events from October 12 to 17, 1980 in Tochigi Prefecture. This meeting was named “Tochi–no–ha (leaves of horse-chestnut) National Athletic Meeting“ and about 16,000 athletes were expected to be present.
The events took the from inter-prefectual competition.
Design : The design of the stamp depicts archery, the newly recognized as sport entry, in bright colors with Mt. Nantai in the background.

- The National Athletic Meet has been held every year since 1946 to promote sports among the people of Japan, while encouraging amateurism and the sporting spirit, in order to promote the health and physical strength of the people.
- The Autumn Program of the 35th National Athletic Meet will be held from October 12 through October 17, 1980, at various places in 19 cities and towns in Tochigi Prefecture, mainly in Utsunomiya.
- Under the theme of “Growing Strength and Human Bondage for Tomorrow“, the coming event popularly called “Horse Chestnut Meet” will be participated by a total of 16,000 athletes and coaches from every part of the country.
