- The Fourth Summit of the Heads of State or Governments of the SAARC countries held in Islamabad, Pakistan decided to declare 1990 as the SAARC Year of the Girl Child. It aims at giving priority to develop the needs of the girl child laying emphasis on literacy, health and child welfare activities.
- In this context, various programmes have been in operation in Nepal to improve the quality of life of Nepalese girls.
