About :

  • Jagadguru Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Swamy (1916-1986) was a great saint and social reformer of modern times emerging from South India. He hailed from a place called Suttur on the banks of river Kapila, located near the heritage city of Mysuru. He was the 23rd pontiff of Math’s Lineage, which has a history of more than one thousand years. In a span of 62 years of his service to mankind, he undertook dissemination of knowledge, especially among the rural and urban poor, and, weaker sections of the society. His acts of sacrifices filled with love and compassion have contributed to the prosperity of thousands of people. Swamyji was born on 29.08.1916 and since his childhood, he practised and found happiness in giving away whatever he had to the needs. As a young boy, he found the need to support fellow poor students and took the initiative to start a free boarding home (sacrificing his own academic pursuit), which later became a seed for more than three hundred institutions built within a span of 30 years.
  • Jagadguru Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Swamy realized the importance of each and every facet of education with his astute vision and utilizing the available opportunities, started colleges in engineering, medicine, pharmacy and liberal education disciplines. Students from North India and countries like Uganda, Zambia, Tanzania and Nepal benefitted from the educational activities in these institutions during 1970-80’s. He silently revolutionized the field of knowledge by making Mysuru city a destination for good education. In addition, he also played an important role in providing healthcare facilities to numerous poor people by establishing Rural Health Centres and a hospital at Mysuru.
  • Realising that the society needed an all-inclusive and overall development, he encouraged Indian music and drama through institutional set-up. He promoted activities to regularly get people of different religions and castes under one roof there by promoting the concept of universal brotherhood. Jagadguru Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Swamy was compassionate towards differently abled children as well and took initiative towards starting schools for them. Swamyji was a spiritual guru to the ruling dynasty of Mysuru. Way back in early sixties, he was identified as a ‘Rajguru‘ by the then Maharaja of Mysuru, Sri Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar.
  • Swamyji had a very close association and shared time and space with some of the noted spiritual leaders like His Holiness Swami Rama of Himalayan Foundation, Sri Rishi Prabhakar of Siddi Samadhi Yoga, Sri Sri Ravishankar of Art of Living, Sri Dalai Lama of Tibet and other ascetics and pontiffs of different religious institutions including mystics and yogis who were his contemporaries. Swamyji, through the example of his fruitful life has left an indelible impression in the hearts of millions of people. Jagadguru Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Swamy was an indomitable spirit, with a divine vision. He demonstrated love, generosity and kindness among the people from all walks of life.
