About :

  • Khadi is a hand woven cloth, generally cotton, using hand-spun thread, which attained iconic status during India‘s freedom struggle. Significantly, it was Gandhiji who propagated the use of self-spun khadi, which he described as “the thread of life”. Politically, this was a part of the movement to defy the economic exploitation of the people of India, albeit through peaceful means, by boycotting foreign made goods. Khadi along with the ‘Charkha‘ or spinning wheel thus became a symbol of Indian patriotism, self-reliance, and national pride.
  • Mahatma Gandhi‘s message of peace, non-violence and harmony is increasingly relevant today. India Post pays tribute to the Father of the Nation, by release of this special commemorative stamp/miniature sheet depicting him on Khadi.
