In the security matrix of the country today, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) is firmly and significantly entrenched. The elemental qualities of valour, strength and dedication have sculpted the force since its inception and further chiseling over the years have honed it into a multi-faceted and multi-dimensional armed force capable of effortlessly adapting itself to a fluid security scenario. By fully dedicating itself towards guarding and protecting industrial units and critical assets, CISF has contributed in a large measure to the rapid and stable growth of the country.
From a modest beginning of around 3000 personnel in 1969, the CISF has grown to 1,49,088 personnel, with the Government further raising its ceiling to 1,80,000 in 2017. The pan-India deployment of the Force across 336 units has within its ambit diversified areas like Atomic Energy and Space Installations, Sea-Ports, Steel Plants, Coal Fields, Hydro-Electric and Thermal Power Plants, Defence production units, Fertilizer and Chemical Industries, Note printing Press/Mints, Heritage Monuments/Museums (Taj Mahal & Red Fort etc.). Beside this, CISF presence in 59 International and major airports of the country, Delhi Metro Rail and important Government buildings is a critical security commitment. The Force also provides VIP Security through its elite and specialized Special Security Group (SSG) commandos. The change in the charter of duties and responsibilities in 2009 has also brought private sector establishments under the security cover of CISF.
The geographical spread of the Force includes sensitive areas, affected by terrorism and left wing extremism, in Jammu & Kashmir, the North East and the States falling within the Red Corridor. Operational preparedness of a high degree has enabled CISF to effectively thwart attacks by inimical forces.
Cutting edge technology is synonymous with CISF, and the Force continuously adapts itself in myriad ways to take on a rapidly changing security scenario with concomitant challenges. Innovativeness and out-of-box thinking run parallel to dedication and commitment in the Force. Therefore, modernization, in terms of equipment and security gadgets is never lost sight of and a highly specialized R & D cell monitors this 24×7.
CISF lays great emphasis on training of its officers and men and in line with this commitment, 2017 has been declared as the ‘Year of Training’. In the pursuit of excellence, training methods, ideas and concepts are relentlessly reviewed, de-freezed and set into optimal and benefit-accruing systems and processes. This equips the force with critical security vision as it moves from strength to strength, and enters deeply divergent and challenging areas of responsibility.
The ”Lost and Found” system has been of immense help to the rightful owners in reclaiming their lost articles at airports and Delhi Metro. During the year, unclaimed property worth Rs. 38.44 crore at airports was recovered. Out of this property worth Rs. 10.26 Crore was handed over to the rightful owners and remaining Rs. 28.18 Crore has been deposited with the airport operators. Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), in collaboration with United Nation Development Programme (UNDP), awarded National Industrial Security Academy (NISA) for “Excellence in Training” for exceptional work in the category of “Trainer/Faculty Development”. Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) awarded CISF with “FICCI SMART POLICING AWARD” in the category of other Policing Initiatives for launching “Lost and Found Web Application” on the CISF official website for items and valuables left behind by the commuters at the 59 airports. The National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) adjudged CISF “M-Power App” as the Best IT project amongst CAPFs in the category of empowering police with information technology. And for the fifth time, CISF won the “Best Marching Contingent” award in the Republic Day parade, 2017.
CISF stands tall, strong and proud, protecting the nation and keeping its critical assets secure. The commitment and dedication of the Force remain steadfast. The confidence and trust that the Government has reposed on the Force, always acts as a motivator to achieve great heights of success. CISF will be celebrating its 50^th year i.e. Golden Jubilee from 10^th March, 2018.
