About :

  • Constitution Day, celebrated every year on November 26, marks the adoption of the Constitution of India in 1949. As we approach its 75th anniversary, this day not only commemorates the foundational legal framework of the country but also serves as a moment for reflection on the core principles of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity that it embodies.
  • The journey towards a constitutional framework began long before India’s independence. The need for such a framework emerged from the socio-political challenges posed by British colonial rule. Various reforms, including the Government of India Act of 1935, set the stage for self-governance and democratic ideals. Following independence in 1947, the Constituent Assembly, which included prominent leaders such as Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, worked tirelessly to draft a Constitution reflective of India’s diverse aspirations. The draft was officially adopted on November 26, 1949, establishing India as a sovereign democratic republic.
  • The Constitution of India stands as the supreme law of the land, detailing the governance structure, fundamental rights, and duties of citizens. It enshrines a system of checks and balances among the executive, legislature, and judiciary, ensuring no single entity can dominate. Its comprehensive nature draws from various legal traditions, making it one of the longest written constitutions globally, comprising 448 articles and 12 schedules. A notable feature is its emphasis on fundamental rights, guaranteeing civil liberties for all citizens. Rights such as equality, freedom of speech, and protection against discrimination underscore the commitment to dignity and equality, irrespective of caste, creed, or gender.
  • The Preamble reading is a key event during Constitution Day celebrations, encapsulating the essence of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity. Educational institutions often host debates, discussions, and workshops to foster a deeper understanding of constitutional rights and responsibilities among students and citizens alike. In 2015, the Government of India officially declared November 26 as Constitution Day, emphasizing its importance in the nation’s democratic framework. This has further spurred efforts to educate the public about constitutional values and principles. Constitution Day serves as a reminder of the necessity to uphold the values enshrined in the Constitution. In a diverse nation like India, it acts as a unifying force that promotes social justice and inclusivity, ensuring marginalized voices are heard.
  • The judiciary plays a pivotal role in interpreting and enforcing the Constitution. Landmark Supreme Court judgments have shaped the legal landscape, acting as guardians of fundamental rights against arbitrary state actions.
  • The youth are vital in shaping the future of democracy. Engaging them in constitutional discussions and encouraging participation in democratic processes can cultivate a more informed and active citizenry. Constitution Day is an urgent call to action for the younger generation to uphold democratic principles and strive for a society reflecting the Constitution’s ideals. As we celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Constitution, we honour the foundational values that support the Indian state. This occasion is a reminder for all citizens to reflect on their rights and responsibilities, actively participating in the democratic process. By honouring the Constitution and its architects, India can reaffirm its dedication to justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity. Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of Constitution is more than a celebration of a historical document; it is a call to continue the journey towards a just and equitable society. Let it inspire each citizen to engage actively with the Constitution, ensuring its values guide us towards a brighter future.
