About :
- On 23rd March, 1925, the Association of Indian Universities was incepted as the ‘Inter-University Board of India,’ an authorised central agency to develop higher education in India to the highest standards with the concerted efforts of all universities and other higher education bodies together. It was registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, on September 29, 1967, and was rechristened as the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) in 1973. It is now a flagship body for Indian higher education institutions and a valued source of research-based policy advice to the Government of India. Starting as a start-up with higher education as its focus, it has been growing resiliently and resolutely, adding new and allied dimensions like the Equivalence of Degrees/Qualifications of Indian and Foreign Universities, Research and Training, Sports, Cultural Activities, Promotion of Youth Affairs, etc., into its ambit. Apart from cooperating and coordinating among universities and national and international bodies in matters of common interest, AIU has been playing a vital role in shaping Indian higher education by being an integral part of all major decision-making committees and commissions of higher education in the country.
- With the motto
(Sanghat Sanjayate Sandhih) the AIU aims to promote and represent the higher education system and Indian universities through strong liaison with the Government and national/international organisations of higher education, and sister associations worldwide, and to establish liaison between/among universities through active support, cooperation, and coordination among the member universities and all its stakeholders for quality education, research, and other academics. Recognised universities from other countries can also become Associate Members. At present, almost all universities of India are its members, and some universities from countries like Bangladesh, Bhutan, Kazakhstan, Mauritius, Malaysia, Nepal, Thailand, UAE, and the UK are its Associate Members. - The objectives of the AIU include serving as an interuniversity organisation, acting as a bureau of information and facilitating communication, coordination, and mutual consultation amongst universities, and acting as a liaison between the universities and the governments (Central as well as State). It also cooperates with other universities or bodies (national or international) in matters of common interest. AIU acts as the representative of the universities of India and promotes and undertakes programmes to improve standards of instruction, examination, research, textbooks, scholarly publications, library organisation, and other programmes that contribute to the growth and propagation of knowledge.
- AIU helps universities maintain their autonomous character and facilitates student mobility and the exchange of teaching and research staff, sharing of infrastructure, joint research projects, and publications between universities both within India and abroad. The association signs MoUs with counterparts from other countries in broad areas and brings the universities together in areas of mutual interest. AIU also facilitates signing MoUs between universities and appoints or recommends common representatives at conferences, both national and international, on higher education. It assists universities in obtaining recognition for their degrees, diplomas, and examinations from other universities, Indian and overseas. AIU undertakes, organises, and facilitates conferences, seminars, workshops, lectures, and research on various themes related to higher education.
- As a National Sports Promotion Organization (NSPO), AIU promotes sports among member universities and maintains standards in sports, enhancing participation in national and international championship competitions, and making efforts to improve sports infrastructure in universities. Additionally, AIU establishes and maintains organizations dealing with youth welfare, student information services, cultural programmes, adult education, and other activities that contribute to the betterment and welfare of students, teachers, and others connected with universities. AIU acts as a service agency to universities in various capacities and undertakes, facilitates, and provides for the publication of newsletters, research papers, books, and journals.
