About :
- Established as an autonomous Society in 1942, CSIR today is the premier R&D organisation with a comprehensive charter for advancement of S&T for national development. CSIR comprises a well-knit network of 40 laboratories and 80 field/extension centres spread throughout the country, and has a formidable team of about 6500 highly qualified scientists and technologists, supported by about 20,000 responsive technical and managerial personnel. CSIR has over the years developed nearly 2800 technologies/knowhow/designs, of which around 2000 have been licensed to generate industrial output of over Rs. 12,000 crore. Nearly 30% of CSIR’s annual expenditure is met through customer contracted R&D and services.
- CSIR has maintained a balanced mix of applied and basic research efforts which yielded some very significant contributions/achievements, including several ’firsts’. On the scientific front these include flowering of tissue cultured bamboo, discovery of one of the smallest protein molecules – seminal plasmin (an antimicrobial) and ‘chainia’ the smallest molecular weight microorganism (for use in paper & pulp industry). In the field of applied research & technology these include production of baby food from buffalo milk, the first indigenously designed tractor, Centchroman, first non-steroidal oral female contraceptive, etc.
- CSIR provides testing and certification services and facilities in various fields including standards of physical measurements, food products, leather products, batteries, transmission line towers, fuels & lubricants, fire resistance of building components, component integrity, aircraft fatigue and fracture, product toxicology, etc. The Council undertakes surveys for natural resources including air quality in urban environment. It was the survey of the Indian Ocean bed in 1981 by CSIR that enabled India to be the first country to earn pioneer Investor Status under U.N. Treaty on Law of Sea. The Council publishes three popular science periodicals and 14 scientific journals and helps in dissemination of S&T information through maintenance of specialised database in various sectors of industry.
- The Council has so far supported over 32,000 research scholars in diverse fields. Its Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prizes for outstanding scientific and technological achievements are today the most prestigious and coveted S&T awards in the country. The Council is striving to play its role in consonance with national needs and priorities and the completion of its Golden Jubilee is indeed an event of national pride.
